More Coverage

Verizon Wireless has the nation's largest and most reliable 4G LTE network.  Launched in December 2010, our 4G LTE network is now available in more than 500 markets to 98 percent of the U.S. population and covers more than 308 million people, including those in areas served by our LTE in Rural America partners. Verizon Wireless is now adding capacity to its 4G LTE network using AWS spectrum. The additional bandwidth, called XLTE, is now available in more than 400 markets across the country.

When you travel outside 4G LTE coverage areas, your 4G LTE device will automatically connect to Verizon Wireless' 3G network—wherever available, enabling you to stay connected from coast to coast.

Network Reliability

At Verizon Wireless we're regularly testing, maintaining and fine-tuning our network to ensure that you have the top-notch service you need to stay connected to your mobile life. Our network test drive team is one of the largest of its kind of any U.S. wireless company. Every year, our dedicated test men and women drive roughly 1 million miles in specially equipped vehicles to conduct more than 3 million voice call attempts and more than 10 million data tests across the country to compare the performance of the Verizon Wireless network with our competitors' networks.

We built the Verizon Wireless network to deliver an unparalleled customer experience and to be a reliable source of communication during emergencies. Battery power backs up all our facilities. Generators stand ready at all switching facilities and many cell site locations. During extended power outages, we're equipped to deploy emergency power when and where it's needed. Our network operations centers in New Jersey and Texas monitor all cell sites and switches across our nationwide network. Our Cell on Light Trucks (COLTs) can be deployed on short notice to process thousands of calls every hour in the event cell sites are damaged or disabled by a community disaster. Our Cell on Wheels (COW) are fully functional, generator-powered mobile cell sites that enhance coverage and capacity when needed. We do all of this to consistently ensure an even higher level of wireless service.

A Secure Network

At Verizon Wireless, we believe that a reliable network is also a secure network. We work every day to protect our network against outside attacks, tampering, malicious activity and events that could potentially disrupt or degrade our customers' ability to use Verizon Wireless voice and data services.

How We Do It
We guard against suspicious traffic patterns. Without interfering with normal, valid traffic, we use our own analysis and third-party intelligence to select and proactively block a limited number of potentially harmful sources. We also take measures to limit, contain and prevent malicious software, or "malware," found on customer equipment from impacting our network while protecting our customers' equipment and preventing high, unexpected billed usage.

We don't, however, block lawful traffic based on content or subject, nor do we block sites based on content or subject. The only exceptions to this rule are when the IP address hosts unlawful content or when it's blocked at the customer's request.

LTE in Rural America

At Verizon Wireless, we're committed to extending 4G LTE coverage beyond the footprint of our nationwide network. With the LTE in Rural America Program, we're collaborating with rural carriers that serve areas not currently covered by the Verizon Wireless network. By combining their tower and backhaul assets with our core LTE equipment and premium 700 MHz spectrum, these participating rural carriers can more quickly build and operate their own 4G networks.

Expanding 4G LTE access to rural areas not only provides the speed and reliability of 4G to rural carriers' customers when they travel, it also ensures a seamless experience for Verizon Wireless customers traveling in areas outside our network.  Together with our partners, we're bringing the speed and performance of 4G LTE to rural America.
